A joke is a short story or short series of words spoken or communicated
with the intent of being laughed at or found humorous by the listener
or reader. A practical joke differs in that the humour is not
verbal, but mainly visual (e.g. putting a custard pie in somebody's
face).
Most jokes contain two components: joke setup
(for example, "A man walks into a bar...") and a punch
line ("...and says 'Ouch!', it was an iron bar!"),
which, when juxtaposed with the setup, provides the necessary
humour to elicit laughter from the audience.
In literature, a humor character was one in whom a single passion
predominated; this interpretation was especially popular in
Elizabethan and other Renaissance literature. One of the most
comprehensive treatments of the subject was the Anatomy of Melancholy,
by Robert Burton. The theory found its strongest advocates among
the comedy writers, notably Ben Jonson and his followers, who
used humor characters to illustrate various modes of irrational
and immoral behavior. In medicine, the theory lost favor in
the 19th cent. after the German Rudolf Virchow presented his
cellular pathology.
